D-Galactose for inhibiton of liver metastases

D-Galactose or D-Galactose rich polysaccharides exhibits anti-metastatic effects. Liver bound galactose specific lectins are important binding sites for metastasizing tumor cells expressing free galactose residues. The carbohydrate D-Galactose binds to the liver lectins thus blocking the sites and inhibiting liver metastases. Galasyn® is in the phase III clinical trials. The first marketing authorization in Europe is expected in the year 2003/2004.
